A Shared Love of Art

Created by Peter 3 years ago

I first got to know John through mutual friends who had worked with him at Harrow's Land Registry. I had never worked there but had been invited by these friends to attend several of their Christmas dinners.                                                                                           As it has turned out, John was the only one of those whom I knew from the Land Registry who had remained a close friend. We shared an interest in art and history and started going to galleries and museums, first with a group of friends and then, often, just the two of us. The National Gallery, The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Hayward Gallery and the Southbank Centre, The Royal Academy, The British Museum; amongst many others. We benefitted from both being just an hour's ride, or less, on the Metropolitan Underground line into central London where there are so many magnificent artistic and cultural venues.                                                                                 I feel privileged to have, for so many years, enjoyed John's companionship and good conversations, sharing our opinions on the exhibitions and events we saw. It was a help that I'm a member of The British Museum and The Art Fund and could sometimes get John into an exhibition free, whilst John was a member of The Tate Galleries where he could do the same for me. John's company though was beyond any price of the admission fee.                                                                                                                                             I had hoped that when the Lockdown is finally lifted, we would resume our journeys to museums and galleries. One of the sorrows of loosing such a dear friend is that this will no longer happen. All I can do is treasure the memory of the times we had together.
