How we almost didn't make it to Italy.

Created by Peter 3 years ago
I've enjoyed John's company on many day trips and holidays. One was a coach tour of Italy. We were to join our tour party at, and to set off from, London's Victoria coach station. There was little time to spare as we arrived. Our coach was not at the departure bay where we'd been informed it would be. As the departure time approached, we searched for the coach with increasing concern. An announcement was made over the public address system: "Will Mr & Mrs. Williams go to bay number 17". It was a few minutes before we wondered: "Had they meant us?!" They had. We rushed to bay 17, only to watch, in dismay, as our coach glided out of the station. They presumably didn't see us running after them, waving frantically. To our immense relief, a member of staff at the information desk phoned ahead and persuaded our coach to wait for us at the channel port whilst we were fortunately found spaces on a later coach and were united with our tour party. Aware of the frustration the delay caused to our fellow travelers, we apologised profusely. We were the butt of some fairly good-natured jokes- this was the '90s; before it was assumed that two blokes sharing the same surname might be a married couple! Nonetheless, we went on to have a memorable tour of Italy, including my one and only visit to Rome, made all the more enjoyable by John's easygoing, good-natured companionship and our shared enthusiasm for all we saw: art, architecture, historical & archaeological sites, Italian culture, food and the magnificent scenery.
